There aren’t many $10 wines that deliver as well as McManis Cabernet Sauvignon. I guess that’s why several vintages have recently made the Wine Enthusiast Best Buy List.
The McManis Vineyard is a family owned and operated winery located near the town of Ripon, California. Ron McManis joined the family business in 1979, becoming the fourth generation to farm in California’s northern interior. In addition to the fruit sourced from over 2,700 acres owned and farmed by McManis Family Vineyards, the winery purchases approximately 25-30 percent of the grapes from long-term growers in select growing regions.
The McManis Cab is nicely balanced with rich fruit and earthy notes on the nose, juicy black currant on the palate, and a peppery finish. As the wine opens up in the glass, subtle vanilla and oak flavors emerge. This Cab has none of the issues we often encounter in the $10 category, such as off-balanced acidity or tartness on the finish. McManis isn’t doing the heavy lifting of a Caymus or Silver Oak but its rustic simplicity has its own charms.
